The South African Mountaineering Development and Training Programme (MDT) was developed to establish and maintain nationally recognised skills and training standards for the many clubs, organisations and individuals active in mountain related activities.

The MDT programme arose out of a mandate from representatives of the main mountaineering and hiking clubs of South Africa. At a conference held at Kirstenbosch in 1994, these organisations, recognising the fact that an increasing number people were venturing into our mountains, increasing the risk of injury and death, felt that nationally recognised leadership and skills standards should be established. Since then many professional and semi-professional guides, instructors and organisations have become involved and endorsed the activities of the MDT, including the UIAA. (World Mountaineering Federation)
